China’s Independent Zirconia Sintering Technology and Industrial Application

2026-07-02
China has built a complete, self-reliant industrial system for Zirconia ceramic sintering, relying on its rich zirconium and rare earth resources, mature manufacturing chains, and continuous technical upgrades from local research institutions and enterprises. Different from conventional overseas sintering solutions, China’s customized processes better meet the demands of large-scale manufacturing, cost control, and high-end precision production.
Domestic two-step pressureless sintering has become the mainstream mass-production process for structural zirconia components. By adopting a high-temperature short-time densification stage followed by a low-temperature long-time grain stabilization stage, the technology delivers high densification above 99.4% while controlling fine grain structures. The final 3Y-TZP products achieve stable mechanical performance, with flexural strength ranging from 1500 to 1700 MPa and fracture toughness of 11–13 MPa·m¹ᐟ². This optimized process significantly reduces production energy consumption and improves product consistency, suitable for large-batch industrial ceramic parts.
Localized spark plasma sintering (SPS) realizes low-temperature and ultra-fast sintering. Within only several minutes, high-quality nanocrystalline zirconia is obtained with fewer structural defects and excellent aging resistance. The technology is widely used for high-precision components and solid-state battery electrolyte materials, supporting the development of China’s new energy and semiconductor sectors.
In dental medical applications, China’s independently developed ultrafast high-temperature sintering equipment enables chairside rapid fabrication. Sintered 4Y/5Y zirconia restorations meet ISO clinical strength standards, balancing aesthetics and durability, and are widely adopted in domestic dental institutions. Microwave-assisted sintering also serves as an energy-efficient manufacturing method, helping the industry achieve greener production.
At present, domestic zirconia sintered products are fully applied in dental restoration, semiconductor precision ceramics, new energy electrolyte components, and medical implant devices. With continuous iteration of localized sintering technology, China’s zirconia ceramic industry will further replace imported products and support the high-quality development of advanced manufacturing industries.
