Why Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄) Earns "Zero Negative Reviews"

2025-07-18

Would you believe that after its initial discovery, Silicon Nitride was actually used merely as a "fertilizer"? People believed that combining silicon with nitrogen and spreading silicon nitride on fields could release nitrogen to nourish plants.

Later, researchers recognized silicon nitride’s potential as a high-performance structural ceramic material. Subsequent studies confirmed this hypothesis. Consequently, leveraging its exceptional properties—high-temperature resistance, Wear Resistance, low density, high strength, and extreme hardness—silicon nitride ceramics have been widely adopted across diverse fields: metallurgy, aerospace, energy, machinery, military technology, optics, and glass manufacturing.

Thus, silicon nitride (ceramic) has earned its reputation as a near-perfect ceramic material. The industry has enthusiastically bestowed upon it impressive titles such as:"The All-Around Champion of Materials","The Ultimate Performance Ceramic","Ceramic Steel".

  1. Why Truly "Omnipotent"?

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a strongly covalent compound with approximately 70% covalent bonding character. The fundamental structural unit of its crystal is a silicon-nitrogen tetrahedron, where a silicon atom occupies the tetrahedron's center, and nitrogen atoms reside at its four vertices. Each nitrogen atom is shared by three mutually overlapping tetrahedra, collectively forming a continuous, stable three-dimensional network structure.

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) crystals are generally acknowledged to exhibit three polymorphic forms: the hexagonal α-phase, hexagonal β-phase, and cubic γ-phase. However, γ-Si₃N₄ can only be synthesized under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions (>15 GPa, 1500°C). Consequently, research on silicon nitride structures predominantly focuses on α-Si₃N₄ and β-Si₃N₄. The properties of crystals are intrinsically linked to their spatial configurations. β-Si₃N₄demonstrates superior thermodynamic stability, enduring temperatures exceeding 1420°C, while undergoing a reconstructive phase transformation from α-configuration to β-configuration at elevated temperatures.

Silicon nitride exhibits directional and saturating characteristics in its covalent bonds. As a covalent crystal, the high binding strength between atoms imparts excellent hardness and mechanical strength to silicon nitride. Its ceramic products are wear-resistant and possess high resistance to bending and compression. The wear failure of silicon nitride ceramics occurs in a manner similar to metals, characterized by layer-by-layer peeling rather than fracture. Silicon nitride is lightweight, with a low density that makes it significantly lighter than materials such as steel, alloy steel, and titanium alloy of the same volume. Due to its tetrahedral units forming a spatial network structure, silicon nitride exhibits strong chemical stability, allowing it to withstand the erosion of all inorganic acids and bases except for hydrofluoric acid. The dense lamellar crystal arrangement of β-Si3N4 endows silicon nitride with exceptional high-temperature resistance and thermal shock resistance. Additionally, its low coefficient of thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity allow it to withstand oxidation temperatures of up to 1300~1400°C, decomposing only at temperatures above 1800°C. Silicon nitride also possesses good antibacterial activity and osteoconductivity. Silicon nitride materials, when sintered at high temperatures, can display a micro-rough surface composed of protruding β-Si3N4 ridges. This unique surface structure can influence bacterial interactions, demonstrating good antibacterial effects while enhancing the adhesion of osteoblasts, thus laying the groundwork for subsequent osteogenic differentiation and bone growth. In terms of properties, silicon nitride ceramics are indeed very comprehensive. However, as a ceramic material, it cannot be expected to exhibit toughness akin to metals; nevertheless, its fracture toughness is still significantly higher than that of other ceramic materials such as aluminum nitride and alumina (though weaker than Zirconia).

  1. The Performance of the 'Almighty': Applications of Silicon Nitride

In 1955, Collins and Gerby from the UK first produced silicon nitride in ceramic form using the reactive sintering method. Since then, the application of silicon nitride has primarily expanded in ceramic form. Ceramic products have fully utilized the excellent thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of the material, broadening the commercial application fields of silicon nitride, in line with the emerging technological and high-end industrial developments. It is widely used in mechanical engineering, semiconductor electronics, biomedical applications, metallurgical manufacturing, wave transmission, optics, and other fields, fully reflecting the characteristics of an 'all-round champion.'

Aerospace:

Porous silicon nitride ceramics possess relatively high flexural strength and lower density, making them one of the key factors for their application in the aerospace field. They also exhibit creep resistance, which enhances structural stability at high temperatures. This material has a variety of additional properties, including hardness, electromagnetic characteristics, and thermal resistance, and is used as a wave-transmitting material for manufacturing antenna covers and windows. With the development of the defense industry, missiles are advancing towards high Mach numbers, wide bandwidth, multi-mode, and precision guidance. The excellent properties of silicon nitride ceramics and their composites, including thermal protection, wave transmission, and load-bearing capabilities, make them one of the high-performance wave-transmitting materials for the next generation of research.

Mechanical Engineering:

Silicon nitride ceramics are primarily used in the metallurgical industry for applications such as thermal radiation protection tubes, burner nozzles, and crucibles. In the mechanical industry, they are utilized as valves, pipelines, classification wheels, and ceramic cutting tools. The most widespread application is in silicon nitride ceramic bearing balls, particularly silicon nitride bearings, which are extensively used in wind power generation equipment.

Biomedical Sciences

With the continuous advancement of biomedical materials research, it has been discovered that silicon nitride ceramics not only possess good biocompatibility and osteogenic properties but also exhibit favorable affinity with cells and other biological tissues, along with excellent imaging performance, making them an ideal biomedical material. They have seen preliminary applications in implants for biosensors, spinal surgeries, orthopedics, and dentistry.

Electronics

In order to comply with the systematic, intelligent and integrated development in the field of electronic science and technology, the input power of electronic chips in semiconductor devices continues to increase, and the degree of circuit integration and cable density are increasing, resulting in an increase in the heat generated by the device, which brings difficulties to the heat dissipation of the electronic packaging substrate and becomes the main reason for inhibiting the device to improve work efficiency. Silicon nitride has high theoretical thermal conductivity, high insulation withstand voltage value, strong oxidation resistance and thermal expansion coefficient matching the chip material in the package, which can meet the preparation requirements of high-power heat dissipation substrate materials, and can be used for packaging and heat dissipation of high-speed circuits and high-power semiconductor devices such as IGBT, LG, and CPV.

Conclusion

From the perspective of comprehensive performance and a wide range of applications, it is not an exaggeration to call silicon nitride (ceramics) the all-around champion.
